The North Austin Lions Club was chartered in 1948 by the Downtown Austin Lions club. This is one of the original founders clubs that was established around the same time as the first Lions Club in Chicago IL in 1917. The Downtown Austin Lions Club is still in operation since that time. We were the first club to spin off from the Downtown Austin Lions Club. There were about 45 charter members who started the North Austin Lions Club. Our first President was Bill Williams II. He was the Austin City Manager back during his term as President of the club One of our early projects was the building and maintaining of a little league club in Austin. We had a field and club house located around 38th St. and West Ave. The land was donated to our club for a $1.00 by Matilda Shipe We traded the original land to a developer for our new location at 1103 Justin Ln. We now have a Meeting Hall and Soccer Field still called Shipe Hall and Field. Chuck walker was the 10th president. president II. We have had many elected officials as members of our club. One of our earlier members was a county commissioner, we have also had many other members that served as part of the city, county, and state government. Some of our charities that we are one-hundred percent donors to are the Lions Camp in Kerville TX (This camp used to be called Cripple Children’s Camp.) and we have also been one-hundred percent donors to the Lone Star Eye Bank (The North Austin Lions Club has had several member who served on the board of directors for the Lone Star Eye Bank). The national president of Lions Club International (Jimmy Ross) has come to our club on different occasions such as our club’s 50 anniversary. The North Austin Lions club had helped start many fundraisers through fishing tournaments held on the central Texas Lakes and track & field events some of which can be held at our own Shipe Field. We are involved with Austin Lions Sight Conservation (ALSC) which all clubs support by taking part in a Chili cook-off and rummage sale held south of Austin. Some of the the people that benefit from the cook-off are children of Austin independent school district through eye examinations and donation of eyeglasses. One of our long-time members Willie Hargrove is on the committee for Austin Lions Sight Conservation program, We are a charity organization that is committed to the service of others through service and donations. |
